Despite what most people think, most plastic actually can't be recycled. Most college students frequently use red solo cups, and even those can't be recycled. The only plastics that can be recycled are #1 and #2 plastics. Labels can be found typically under the bottle/cup etc. Many of these plastics can actually be remade into other bottles, polyester fabrics and other plastic items.
