84% of people said having more information about recycling would increase their confidence.
Less than 50% of people believe that their recyclables are truly made into new products.
The rules you learn the first time you recycled stick with you, so as the local program evolves, people don't get informed about the change.
We interviewed The Assitant Director of Sustainability at Pomona College, Nikhil Schneider. He presented many ideas for increasing recycling:
Include more signage at the point of acquisition as opposed to point of release.
Work towards standardizing all recycling protocols to help students understand it.
If we can work towards implementing these potential soltuions as well as dispelling misconceptions about recycling, then we will be one step closer to a green society!
